DigitalOcean and Vultr are close competitors selling nearly the same thing, and Vultr is consistently the cheaper of the two by about 20%. At 1 GB of RAM both charge $5 for a single vCPU and 25 GB of disk. At 2 GB, Vultr asks $10 against DigitalOcean's $12. At 4 GB with 2 vCPU and 80 GB, it is $20 against $24. At 8 GB with 4 vCPU and 160 GB, $40 against $48. The specifications at each tier are identical, so this is a straight price difference rather than a value judgement. What DigitalOcean sells for the premium is the surrounding platform and the documentation. Managed databases, App Platform, Spaces, managed Kubernetes and a genuinely excellent tutorial library that has taught a large share of the industry how to deploy things. Its API and Terraform provider are mature, and its community answers questions. Vultr matches the core compute product and undercuts it, offers more locations, and adds bare metal and a decent GPU range, but the managed services around the edges are thinner and the documentation is not in the same class. For a single server you will configure yourself, Vultr is cheaper for the same hardware and there is little reason not to take the saving. For a team that will lean on managed databases and App Platform, DigitalOcean's ecosystem is what the extra 20% buys.
